Acclaimed Opera “Silent Night” Comes to PBS

Christmas is a magical time for many all over the world – and the same was true for the soldiers fighting in World War I in 1914. For one evening on December 24, 1914, French, German and Scottish soldiers laid down their arms and joined in a spontaneous celebration reflecting the peace, fellowship and humanity of the season.

CET and ThinkTV are excited to celebrate the season with a broadcast presentation of the operatic retelling of the true story of the Christmas Eve truce of 1914 with the program Silent Night. This two-act production was commissioned by the Minnesota Opera and premiered in November 2012 to national acclaim, including a Pulitzer Prize for Music for composer Kevin Puts. With a libretto by Mark Campbell, Silent Night is sung in French, English, German, Italian and Latin with English subtitles.

Silent Night will air at the following times:

Friday, Dec. 13, at 9pm on CET

Saturday, Dec.  14, at 8pm on ThinkTV16

Monday, Dec. 16, at 8pm on CET Arts

Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 9pm on ThinkTV14

We're also excited to let you know that the Cincinnati Opera will present this production at Music Hall on July 10 and 12, 2014, just days away from the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I. To commemorate that conflict, Cincinnati Opera is collaborating with the city’s leading cultural institutions to present “Cincinnati Remembers World War I,” a series of community programs focused on the World War I era.
