REGISTRATION QUESTIONS

Why should I register?
CETconnect now offers enhanced services to people who register to make the site easy to use and provide an easy way for you to discover new and interesting videos. Tell us your preferences and, when you return to the site, we'll have videos waiting to meet those preferences. After you watch a video, My CET will put it in your "Videos Watched" area, and present you with new videos that you haven't seen but still meet your preferences. See a video you want to watch, but don't have time? Click the "Watch Later" button and you'll find it in your "My CET" area.

Registration also gives CET the opportunity to provide special offers and options online to visitors and to people who provide financial support to CET.

How much does it cost?
Registering on CETconnect – and getting the services that the registration provides – is free!

What does CETconnect do with my information?
CETconnect asks for very little information – just enough to help us provide you with videos that you would like to watch. CETconnect respects your privacy and will not share this information with anyone! If you want to read our entire privacy statement, you can find it by clicking here.

I can't remember my password – what should I do?
CETconnect has a password retrieval option based on the month and year of your birth. Just click this link and follow the directions and the password will be emailed to you.

I checked the box so I don't have to sign in every time. Why won't CETconnect remember me?
In order for this function to work, you need to set up your browser to accept "cookies". Here are the steps to do that:

If you use Internet Explorer:

  1. At the top of your web browser, go to "Tools" and then select "Internet Options."
  2. Click on the tab that is labeled "Privacy".
  3. Click on the button that is labeled "Sites".
  4. Copy the CETconnect web address -- http://www.cetconnect.org -- and paste it into the area marked "Address of website" and then click "Allow."
  5. Close the window by clicking each "OK" button.
If you use Firefox:
  1. Click "Tools" and then selection "Options" and highlight the "Privacy" icon.
  2. In the center area labeled "cookies" click the button labeled "Exceptions."
  3. Copy the CETconnect web address -- http://www.cetconnect.org/ -- and paste it into the area marked "Address of website" and then click "Enable."
  4. Click "Close" and then "OK" to complete the actions.
As you can see, you can always go in and change the settings.

I did all that – and it still doesn't remember me!
This function works best if you are the only person using a computer. If you share a computer with anyone in your household, and that person clicked the "Log Out" button you will have to log in when you return to CETconnect. Each person must log in to see his or her preferences on CETconnect.

Also, the "Remember Me" function works on the computer and browser in which it was set up. For example, if you registered on CETconnect on your laptop, your desktop computer will remember you on CETconnect only if you go into your My CET area and check the box that says "Save My Password on This Computer".

There are several other scenarios that may apply to you:
     - While many people use one specific browser, changing to another browser means you will have to log in again.
     - A new computer, while exciting and fun, requires a set up. Even if you import all your bookmarks and settings, the CETconnect cookie may not transfer. Just log in once, check the "Save my password" box, and you're good to go.

VIDEO PLAYBACK QUESTIONS

Why won't the video appear?
The videos on CETconnect.org open in a pop-up window. Pop-up blockers may prevent you from viewing the videos. Here are some hints to disable pop-up blockers:

  • Internet Explorer 6.0 has an active pop-up blocker turned on by default. This feature can be turned off by selecting TOOL, POP-UP BLOCKER followed by TURN OFF POP-UP BLOCKER.
  • Internet Explorer 7.0, select the TOOLS menu on the top right of the page, scroll to the pop-up blocker option, and select TURN OFF POP-UP BLOCKER.
  • Norton Anti Virus: For users running Norton anti-virus, there are 2 controls that must be disabled: 1) the pop-up blocker and 2) the ad blocker.
  • Other Pop-up Blockers may exist on the Google Toolbar, the Yahoo Toolbar, an anti-virus package, or other software. Please read your products documentation for turning off popup bockers.

Why does the video stutter and sometimes stop?
Optimum viewing on CETconnect.org requires a broadband connection, such as cable, DSL or IP over power lines broadband. CET strongly recommends that users with a slow connection ( e.g., a dial up with a connection less than 56Kbs) should not attempt to play the video on this site. Either the video will not play at all or it will take a very long time to start and then will not play smoothly. All other non-video features of this site should work fine.

What do I need to do to watch CETconnect videos on an Apple computer?
CETconnect videos work best with the latest, free version of Windows Media Player; they are not compatible with Quick Time or Real Player. You can download for free the latest version of Windows Media Player. Mac users should download the latest version of Flip4Mac™.

No matter what I do, the video won't play. What else can I try?
Sometimes companies and organizations install blockers to keep people from watching video online because the video uses a lot of "bandwidth" that slows file retrieval, email and other critical business-based tasks. Others do this for security reasons.

Also, you can find helpful troubleshooting information on the Microsoft website.

Why does the size of the video seems distorted in Firefox?
You may not have the Windows Media Player plugin for Firefox installed. Mozilla provides a step-by-step process for installing the plugin on their support site..

Why does the video screen goes black intermittently during playback while using Firefox?
You may need to adjust your video accelarion settings. Right-click on the player and select ''Options''. In the ''Video Acceleration'' panel, lower the tool bar to adjust the settings.

QUESTIONS ABOUT CET TELEVISION

What's all this talk about digital television, or DTV?
DTV – digital television – is a new, over-the-air broadcasting system that will go into effect nationwide on February 17, 2009. CET has a wealth of accurate, factual information available on digital television. You can read about it -- and watch videos about it -- on our DTV webpage and there's additional information on CET's TechInfo blog. CET's technical staff is also available to answer questions. You can email us at TechInfo@cetconnect.org, or call (513) 381-4033 during regular business hours.

What happens with CET & Channel 48 after February 17, 2009?
CET will still be on the air. The analog channel designation of "48" will go away; you will be able to receive CET on digital channel 34. Because digital transmission offers greater capabilities, in addition to better quality, there are also "subchannels" of CET you can watch: CET's High Definition channel, CET World, CET Create, and CET Kids. Click here to get more information and click here to see the program schedule for these channels.

Who decides what programs to put on the air?
As a PBS station, CET receives much of its programming through that organization. In addition, there are other entities that distribute programs to public television stations. Finally, CET is open to reviewing programs and films produced by independents and other organizations.

In getting things on the air, CET's program director has to weigh many factors. Also, CET has a Community Service Advisory Committee which advises CET in local programming and projects.

Why can't I watch my favorite programs online?
CETconnect provides a wide variety of videos, a number of which are programs produced by CET and for CET. We also provide links to videos of PBS programs and websites that feature these types of videos. You can find local program information here, and click here for a list of PBS programs that can be viewed online.

Programs will become available online more often in the future. Many of the older programs either were unable to procure online rights, or were produced before the opportunity existed.
