Workshop Descriptions for January through June 2008

Topics developed are based upon early childhood content, the Ohio Early Learning Content Standards, and NAEYC best practices. Participants are encouraged to sign-up for all three workshops as a series. Ohio Ready To Learn Workshops are provided by the Ohio Educational Television Stations through a grant from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and the CET Ready To Lead in Litearcy workshops are provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the P&G Live, Learn, and Thrive Campaign.

  • Infant Toddler Module 2—Physical
Through lecture, video, group discussion, & small group activity, based upon the Ohio I/T Guidelines, participants will learn how children’s physical health impacts development. Care giving strategies to help young children achieve optimal physical health while allowing children to explore and connect with the world around them will be discussed. CDA Area 1 (Must take overview before this course)
  • Infant Toddler Module 3—Emotional
Through lecture, video, group discussion, & small group activity, based upon the Ohio I/T Guidelines, participants will further deepen their understanding of the emotional development of infants and toddlers, including the importance of attachment, and how children develop self awareness and self regulation. Participants will discuss how this knowledge can be translated into emotionally supportive care giving practices. CDA Area 3 (Must take Overview before this course)
  • Infant Toddler Module 4—Social
Through lecture, video, group discussion, & small group activity, based upon the Ohio I/T Guidelines, participants will gain a better understanding of how the connection of infants and toddlers to adults and children around them shape their interactions, skills, and abilities. Care giving strategies to support social development will also be shared. CDA Area 3 (Must take Overview before this course)
  • Infant Toddler Module 5—Motor Development
Through lecture, video, group discussion, & small group activity, based upon the Ohio I/T Guidelines, participants will study typical, as well as variations in, small, large motor and oral motor development. Care giving strategies to enhance young children’s motor skills, exploration and learning through movement will be discussed. CDA Area 2 (Must take Overview before this course)
  • Infant Toddler Module 6—Language
Through lecture, video, group discussion, & small group activity, based upon the Ohio I/T Guidelines, participants will examine the progression of language development and the areas of language development (Comprehension, Expression, and Social Communication). Early Literacy Foundations will also be discussed. Care giving strategies to support language development will also be discussed. CDA Area 2 (Must take Overview before this course)
  • Infant Toddler Module 7—Cognitive Development
Through lecture, video, group discussion, & small group activity, based upon the Ohio I/T Guidelines, participants will examine cognitive development including the six Discoveries of Infancy. The Discoveries are Grouping/Categorizing, Cause & Effect, Problem Solving, Memory, Space, and Imitation. Care giving strategies to support cognitive development will also be discussed. CDA Area 2 (Must take Overview before this course)
  • Steps Toward Intentional Teaching
Tools like The Ages and Stages Questionnaire allow childcare providers the opportunity to assess children quickly and to communicate any concern with parents in an objective manner. Quality assessment helps the providers to focus on the child’s strengths and to create a plan for future success.
  • Check Up Time
In this workshop participants will look at people in their communities who help them stay healthy including their pets! Understanding the importance of roles and responsibilities in society builds the foundation for the study of citizenship. Building on a child’s view of the world and the important people in their lives, these CET Learning Triangles will help participants apply literacy standards and activities to real life events like going to the doctor and keeping teeth healthy and clean.
  • Helpers Around Town
Recognizing the importance of developing language and communication skills will be the focus of this workshop. Participants will learn how to help children build vocabulary around experiences within the child’s community. Participants will view media as a springboard to Learning Triangles activities and segue into using exploring the community to help children understand their world and people in it.
  • People In My Neighborhood
“These are the people in my neighborhood….” Children are curious about everything especially other people. The final workshop culminates with ways to help children practice social studies skills—asking questions and being curious enough to find answers about people who help make their communities work. Participants will integrate the language standards in the Learning Triangles to gain information, make predictions, and represent their ideas through multiple forms of media and play. Blending children’s programming, children’s literature, and sensory learning activities aligned with the Ohio Early Learning Content Standards will excite children, parents, and teachers.

IACET CEU Credit 0.2 pending for each of the three workshop phases. The cost is $10 to receive the CEU credit.

Note: The workshops are free; the charge is only for IACET CEUs for those interested in CDA renewal. ODJFS In-service forms will still be provided to each participant.
