CET LEARNING SERVICES: TAPING RIGHTS

TAPING RIGHTS FOR INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA LISTED IN THE ONLINE CATALOG

The taping rights are listed with the descriptive copy for each program. Taping rights vary by program as determined by the distributing agencies and producers of the shows.
Seven-day: Programs can be recorded and retained for seven days after the broadcast date.

One-year: Programs can be recorded and retained for one year from the date of taping, even if CET does not carry the program in the following academic year. Additionally, if the program is broadcast on CET in the next year, there is no need to erase and re-record, even after the taping anniversary is reached—but such tapes should be erased once the program is no longer broadcast. CET regularly notifies schools about any series that will be dropped from our ITV library.

Unlimited: Programs can be recorded and kept in perpetuity.

GENERAL FAIR USE RECORDING GUIDELINES FOR EDUCATORS

U.S. copyright guidelines cover the recording of an off-air broadcast by a non-profit educational institution. The following guidelines apply for any broadcast media not included in this catalog.
1. Any program may be recorded and held for 45 consecutive calendar days and then must be erased.

2. An individual teacher may use the program once and repeat it once within the first 10 school days of the 45 day period.

3. Recordings must be made at the request of an individual teacher rather than regularly recorded in anticipation of requests. No broadcast program may be recorded off-air more than once at the request of the same teacher.

4. After the first 10 school days of the 45-day retention period, programs can be used only for teacher evaluation purposes.

If you want more information, PBS Teachers features a reference guide for educators.

Media specialists in schools have the ultimate responsibility for what is recorded and the duration of retention. If you have any questions about available rights for a particular series, please call Diane Smiley at (513) 345-6545.
